At the very start of February, government employees in Bangladesh can enjoy a continuous four-day break with minimal leave, thanks to a combination of religious observances and the weekend. According to the Islamic Foundation, the sacred night of Shab-e-Barat will be observed on the night of Tuesday, 3 February 2026. In recognition of this religious occasion, the government has declared Wednesday, 4 February 2026 as an official holiday.
By taking just a single day of leave on Thursday, 5 February, civil servants can extend their break across four consecutive days, as the following Friday, 6 February, and Saturday, 7 February are regular weekly holidays. This provides an ideal opportunity for a long weekend at the very start of the month.
Additionally, the 13th National Parliamentary Election is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 February 2026. To facilitate public participation in the election, the government has declared Tuesday, 11 February, and Wednesday, 12 February as general holidays. Combined with the subsequent weekend (Friday, 13 February, and Saturday, 14 February), citizens and government employees can enjoy another extended four-day break.
The Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, explained, “In connection with the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections, 11 February has been declared a general holiday. Additionally, 10 February will be a general holiday for industrial workers. The election day, 12 February, is already a declared public holiday.”
According to the Ministry of Public Administration’s official 2026 government holiday calendar, the year will feature a total of 14 general holidays and 14 holidays by executive order, of which nine coincide with Fridays and Saturdays. Beyond these, there are also religion-specific optional holidays for government employees, ensuring respect for diverse cultural and religious practices.
| Religion / Community | Optional Holidays in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Muslim | 5 days |
| Hindu | 9 days |
| Christian | 8 days |
| Buddhist | 7 days |
| Minor Indigenous Groups | 2 days |
This calendar allows civil servants to plan their schedules efficiently, enjoying a mix of religious, general, and weekend holidays throughout the year. The government encourages employees to take advantage of these long weekends for rest, family time, and personal pursuits.
With February offering two separate four-day breaks, it promises to be a month of both spiritual reflection and well-deserved leisure for Bangladesh’s public sector workforce.
