Atletico Madrid Thrash La Liga Leaders Real Madrid in Thrilling Derby

Atletico Madrid delivered a stunning performance on Saturday, defeating La Liga leaders Real Madrid 5-2 at the Metropolitano Stadium, ending the visitors’ perfect start to the season.

Julian Alvarez starred with two decisive goals, while Antoine Griezmann added a late fifth to seal an emphatic win for Diego Simeone’s side.

Match Summary

Team Score Scorers
Atletico Madrid 5 Robin Le Normand (14’), Alexander Sorloth (45+’), Julian Alvarez (pen 52’, FK 68’), Antoine Griezmann (88’)
Real Madrid 2 Kylian Mbappe (25’), Arda Guler (37’)

Atletico started brightly, opening the scoring in the 14th minute through Robin Le Normand, following a whipped cross from Giuliano Simeone, son of coach Diego Simeone.

Real responded well, with Kylian Mbappe equalising after a dynamic run down the right flank, and Arda Guler giving Los Blancos a brief lead, assisted by Vinicius Junior’s clever movement and precise pass.

Despite Real’s pressure, Atletico remained dangerous. Alvarez tested Thibaut Courtois with a curling effort that struck the post, and Clement Lenglet controversially put the ball in the net using his forearm.

In first-half stoppage time, Alexander Sorloth headed home to level the match for Atletico, celebrating with fans despite already being on a yellow card.

The game turned decisively in Atletico’s favour after Arda Guler conceded a penalty for a high boot on Nico Gonzalez. Alvarez calmly converted, sending Courtois the wrong way.

Later, Alvarez bent home a free-kick to put Atletico two goals ahead, despite the Belgian keeper getting a hand to the effort.

Substitute Griezmann wrapped up the victory with a composed finish, delighting the home supporters.

“It’s a very special day, we knew how important this game was, being a derby of course but also because we needed the three points,” Alvarez told DAZN.

Tactical Notes

  • Real Madrid entered the derby as the only side with a 100% record.
  • Jude Bellingham returned from shoulder surgery but struggled to influence proceedings.
  • Atletico’s approach was relentless, capitalising on defensive lapses and using width effectively through their wingers.

Diego Simeone reflected on the performance:“There’s a lot of emotion… we’ve had a troubled start to the season. From the start, we knew where we could hurt them. Today was a very, very good performance.”

Meanwhile, Real manager Xabi Alonso acknowledged the defeat: “There are no excuses, we’re hurting, it’s a derby and a deserved defeat.”

La Liga Implications

  • Atletico Madrid rise provisionally to fourth place.
  • Real Madrid could be overtaken by Barcelona if they defeat Real Sociedad on Sunday.
  • Villarreal moved within two points of Real Madrid, beating Athletic Bilbao 1-0 through a 77th-minute strike by substitute Alberto Moleiro.
