In a shocking incident at a polling station in Noakhali-6, Shyamoli Sultana Zedeni, the wife of Hannan Masud—candidate of the 11-party alliance and leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP)—allegedly came under attack.
According to her social media post, members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) reportedly assaulted her with an iron rod and forcibly took her mobile phone. She stated that her phone was destroyed while attempting to record the attack. Zedeni also alleged that her brother-in-law was assaulted alongside her.
The incident has sparked outrage, with claims of inaction by local law enforcement. Zedeni’s post highlighted the perceived passivity of authorities during the attack, raising serious concerns over voter safety and the integrity of the polling process.
Nahid Islam, convener of the NCP, corroborated the allegations on his verified Facebook page, stating: “Shyamoli Sultana Zedeni, wife of our parliamentary candidate for Noakhali-6 (Hatia), was attacked at a polling station by BNP-affiliated thugs. Her mobile phone was seized during the incident, and law enforcement personnel failed to intervene.”
Islam also warned that voters were facing obstacles while trying to reach polling stations. He urged the authorities to immediately apprehend the perpetrators and ensure a safe and fair voting environment.
The incident has raised concerns among local residents and election observers, who fear that such acts of intimidation could undermine the democratic process. Election officials have been called upon to investigate the matter promptly, ensure security at all polling stations, and uphold voter rights.
