Attempted Abduction of Two Schoolchildren Foiled in Mithamain

A wave of panic has swept through the Mithamain Upazila in Kishoreganj following a chilling attempt to abduct two primary school students. On Wednesday afternoon, unidentified assailants reportedly intercepted two young girls, bound them, and attempted to flee with them inside a sack. The harrowing incident occurred near the Mithamain Fire Service Station, only thwarted by the timely intervention of local residents.

Details of the Incident

The victims have been identified as Jhinuk Akter, daughter of Faruq Mia, and Suraiya Akter, daughter of Abdul Haque. Both are six-year-old pupils in the first grade at Kamalpur Government Primary School.

According to Bhanu Ranjan Biswas, the Headteacher of the school, the incident took place shortly after classes ended at 1:00 PM. As the girls were walking home at approximately 1:30 PM, two men on a motorcycle blocked their path. The assailants allegedly used adhesive tape to gag the children, preventing them from screaming, before forcing them into a large sack.

The Rescue

The abduction attempt was interrupted when passers-by noticed the suspicious activity near the Fire Service Station. Sensing they were about to be caught, the criminals abandoned the sack on the roadside and sped away on their motorcycle. Locals rushed to the scene and were horrified to discover the two terrified children inside the discarded bag.

Official Response and Legal Action

Following the rescue, the children were immediately transported to a local hospital. Mithamain Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), S.M. Abdullah-bin-Shafiq, confirmed that the students are physically unharmed but are understandably suffering from severe emotional trauma. “The children are safe and in stable condition. We are currently processing the necessary legal actions to track down the perpetrators,” the UNO stated.

The Headteacher has indicated that a General Diary (GD) is being filed with the Mithamain Police Station. Local law enforcement has increased patrols around educational institutions to reassure anxious parents and guardians. While no arrests have been made as of Thursday morning, police are reportedly reviewing available CCTV footage from the vicinity of the Fire Service Station to identify the motorcycle and the attackers.

This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of students during their commute from school, prompting calls from the community for heightened security measures in rural townships.
