In a disturbing incident in Habiganj’s Baniachong Upazila, unknown miscreants attempted to set fire to a polling centre in the early hours of Monday. Law enforcement authorities, including the police and the military, arrived promptly at the scene, prompting the perpetrators to flee before causing significant damage.
The incident occurred around 1:00 am at the Sunaru Government Primary School polling centre, a key location for the upcoming local elections. Additional Superintendent of Police Ankhi Rani Das confirmed the occurrence, stating that “we received reports of what appeared to be a small flame or spark resembling a firework at the Sunaru polling centre. Police rushed to the site immediately, and the fire lasted for approximately one minute. Two doors of the school showed blackened marks. CCTV footage from the school has been collected, and an investigation is underway.”
Local residents were quick to respond, ensuring that the situation did not escalate. Swarbindu Das, Vice-President of the Subidpur Union BNP and a resident of Sunaru village, described the tense moments: “At around 1:00 am, we learned that some miscreants were attempting to set fire to our polling centre. We immediately alerted the authorities and rushed to the location. By the time we arrived, the perpetrators had already fled. They were unable to ignite a proper fire, and only minor damage occurred to two doors.”
Observers note that the village of Sunaru is linked to the family of Sushanta Das Gupta, a London-based Awami League leader whose activities are currently restricted under legal provisions. Some residents speculate that the attempted arson could be connected to attempts to create unrest in the area, possibly inspired by outside influences.
Authorities have stepped up security measures at polling centres across the upazila to prevent any further disturbances ahead of the election. The investigation is ongoing, with CCTV footage being analysed for leads.
