Despite lingering uncertainty over participation in next month’s T20 World Cup, Pakistan are ensuring their preparations remain on track. The home series against Australia, according to experienced all-rounder Shadab Khan, represents the team’s best opportunity to fine-tune their game ahead of the global tournament.
Pakistan are set to face Australia in a three-match T20 series at home before the World Cup, which is scheduled to commence on 7 February in India and Sri Lanka. Shadab believes the series will play a crucial role not only in finalising the squad but also in shaping the team’s strategies for the high-profile tournament.
Currently engaged in intensive practice sessions, the Pakistani squad conducted a training match on Monday, mirroring the conditions of the upcoming series. Speaking to the media afterwards, Shadab emphasised the importance of competing against a strong side like Australia.
“The series against Australia is our best preparation for the World Cup. Our spinners performed exceptionally in the Asia Cup, and I hope they can carry that momentum forward,” he said.
Addressing recent criticism of his personal form, the leg-spin all-rounder stressed that external discussions do not distract him from improving his game.
“When you perform well, you receive praise, and when you don’t, there’s criticism. There’s a lot said about me, but I focus on my cricket,” he added.
Shadab also highlighted the challenge of adapting to Sri Lankan conditions, which he described as rapidly changing and demanding.
“In modern cricket, adaptability is key. Conditions in Sri Lanka can shift quickly, but wherever we play, our focus is on playing positive cricket,” he said.
On his role within the team, Shadab clarified that he approaches both aspects of his game seriously.
“I am a bowler who can contribute with the bat as well. I try to balance both aspects equally,” he noted, countering claims that he is focusing primarily on batting.
The three-match T20 series against Australia is scheduled as follows:
| Match | Date | Venue | Start Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 29 Jan 2026 | Lahore | Evening |
| 2nd | 31 Jan 2026 | Lahore | Evening |

Australia are expected to arrive in Lahore on 28 January. Following the series, Pakistan are slated to tour Sri Lanka ahead of the World Cup, contingent on government approval.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that a final decision on the team’s participation will be taken within the next week.
