A cherished Bangla New Year anthem is set to return in a refreshed musical incarnation, nearly 18 years after its original release. The evergreen track “Baajere Baaje Dhol O Dhak”, first popularised by singer Sonia, continues to stand as one of the most recognisable and enduring songs associated with Pohela Boishakh celebrations. Over the years, it has maintained its cultural significance, enjoying sustained popularity among audiences in Bangladesh as well as the Bangladeshi diaspora across the globe.
Now, leading production house Gaanchill Music has initiated a revival of the classic composition, presenting it in a contemporary musical arrangement. The initiative aims to preserve the festive spirit and emotional essence of the original while simultaneously reintroducing it to a younger, digitally engaged generation of listeners.
The song was originally written by celebrated lyricist Kabir Bakul, with composition and arrangement by renowned music director Shaukat Ali Emon. In this newly reimagined version, Emon has once again taken charge of the arrangement, ensuring a seamless continuity with the original composition. At the same time, he has incorporated modern production techniques, enriched instrumentation, and updated sound engineering to align the song with present-day musical aesthetics.
The new rendition brings together a notable multi-artist collaboration. Alongside Shaukat Ali Emon, the song features vocals from popular contemporary singers Jhilik, Luipa, Atiya Anisha, and Zakia Sultana Kornia. The accompanying music video has been directed by Chandan Roy Chowdhury, offering a visually modern interpretation designed to resonate with today’s audience expectations and digital-first viewing habits.

Speaking on the revival, Shaukat Ali Emon remarked that the song’s enduring popularity requires no introduction, noting that it has remained an integral part of Pohela Boishakh festivities for nearly two decades. He added that the track has not only been cherished within Bangladesh but has also received significant appreciation from Bangladeshi communities abroad, where it continues to evoke a strong sense of cultural nostalgia.
He explained that the primary motivation behind revisiting the composition was to reconnect it with younger audiences who may not have experienced its original release. While preserving the song’s core identity and celebratory spirit, the new arrangement introduces a more contemporary sonic palette, reflecting evolving trends in music production.
Emon further noted that the central creative challenge lay in balancing nostalgia with innovation—retaining the emotional familiarity of the original while reimagining its presentation in a modern musical context. He expressed confidence that the refreshed version would resonate strongly with today’s listeners and potentially establish itself as part of new-generation Pohela Boishakh traditions.
The revival of “Baajere Baaje Dhol O Dhak” reflects a broader and growing trend within Bangladeshi music, where iconic festive and cultural songs are being reinterpreted for contemporary audiences. As Pohela Boishakh continues to serve as one of the most significant cultural festivals in Bangladesh, such musical reinventions play a vital role in preserving tradition while adapting it to evolving artistic sensibilities.
Asif Iqbal, founder of Gaanchill Music, also underscored the cultural importance of the song, highlighting its deep-rooted connection with Bangladeshi New Year celebrations. He expressed optimism that the renewed version would appeal equally to long-standing admirers and new listeners alike, further strengthening its legacy within the country’s rich musical heritage.
The reimagined version of the iconic anthem is scheduled for release on 9 April via the Gaanchill Music YouTube channel, marking a nostalgic yet forward-looking return of one of Bangladesh’s most enduring festive musical works.
