Badshah Under Scrutiny Over Music Video Controversy

India’s well-known rapper Badshah is facing heightened scrutiny following the release of his latest music video, “Totri”, which has sparked public outrage over its portrayal of school-uniformed girls in provocative sequences. The Haryana Women’s Commission has formally summoned the artist, while the state police have issued a look-out notice, signalling that arrest action could be taken.

The controversy centres on scenes in the video showing girls removing their shoulder bags and dancing in sync with the music. Critics argue that such depictions risk sending inappropriate messages to society. The song has also drawn attention for the use of explicit and objectionable language, intensifying the debate.

On Saturday, Haryana police confirmed the issuance of the look-out notice, citing charges of distributing obscene content. Social media platforms have subsequently taken down the video to prevent further circulation and public exposure.

Addressing the controversy during a live session, Badshah said: “I am aware that many have expressed concerns regarding my new song ‘Totri’. I respect these objections and take them seriously.”

He stressed that the intention behind the video was never to offend anyone in Haryana, adding: “I am a Haryanvi by birth and culture. My language, food, lifestyle, and identity are deeply connected to Haryanvi traditions. I am proud of my roots. I would never, even in thought, disrespect any child or woman. I sincerely request understanding and forgiveness from my community.”

The incident has ignited a wider conversation across social media about the balance between artistic freedom and social responsibility. Legal experts note that a look-out notice is a precautionary legal step that prevents the individual from leaving the country while authorities investigate potential offences.
