‘Bandits’ Kill 16 in Niger Attacks: State Radio

NIAMEY, Niger, 27 February 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Two attacks carried out by “armed bandits” in southwestern Niger have resulted in the deaths of 16 people, according to reports from state radio.

Although the perpetrators have not been identified, the nature of the attacks closely resembles jihadist raids that have increasingly destabilised the central Sahel region in recent months.

State radio reported on Wednesday that the assailants gathered villagers in Dioundiou on the night of 22-23 February before opening fire, killing 14 people. Just two nights later, a second attack took place in a neighbouring town, claiming the lives of two more individuals.

The region surrounding Dioundiou, which shares borders with Nigeria and Benin, has been identified by Nigerien authorities as a stronghold for jihadist groups. It is also traversed by a 2,000-kilometre (1,200-mile) oil pipeline that transports Niger’s crude oil to Benin.

Escalating Violence in the Sahel

The Sahel region has been grappling with a surge in jihadist violence in recent years, fuelled by militant groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. Cross-border attacks have intensified despite ongoing security operations by Niger’s military and regional forces.

In recent months, Niger has also faced political instability following the July 2023 military coup, which led to strained relations with international allies. The withdrawal of French troops from the country, along with Niger’s closer ties to the Mali and Burkina Faso juntas, has raised concerns over regional security and counterterrorism efforts.

Experts warn that the deteriorating security situation could further disrupt local economies, forcing thousands to flee their homes amid growing humanitarian crises in the Sahel.
