Bangladesh’s women’s cricket team will face Sri Lanka in their sixth league match of the Women’s One Day World Cup, in a must-win encounter to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat first, meaning Bangladesh, led by Nigar Sultana, will start in the field. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM local time at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
For this crucial fixture, star pacer Marufa Akter and spin specialist Nahida Akter return to the playing XI after missing the previous match. Their inclusion is seen as vital for Bangladesh’s chances against Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh began the tournament with hopes of defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The team started on a positive note with a seven-wicket win over Pakistan in their opening match.
However, their campaign has been marred by a string of defeats in the following matches:
Opponent | Result | Margin |
England | Lost | 4 wickets |
New Zealand | Lost | 100 runs |
South Africa | Lost | 3 wickets |
Australia | Lost | 10 wickets |
Despite close contests against England and South Africa, the team could not secure victories.
Currently, after five matches, Bangladesh sits sixth in the points table with 2 points. To remain in contention for the semi-finals, Bangladesh must win their remaining two matches and hope for favourable results from the host nation India and New Zealand. Both India and New Zealand have played five matches each, securing four points apiece.
India’s recent loss to England has somewhat eased Bangladesh’s path. A win against Sri Lanka today will significantly bolster their chances of progressing to the semi-finals, while a loss would likely end their campaign.
