Bangladesh Bank Drops Dress Code Guidelines After Backlash

Facing intense public criticism, Bangladesh Bank has withdrawn its recently circulated internal directive regarding employee attire. A statement to the media on Thursday, 24 July, clarified the matter.

According to the statement, discussions were held in departmental meetings concerning a proposal advising officials and employees of all levels to wear professional and modest attire during office hours, considering the country’s social context. However, no formal policy decision was taken, nor was any official circular issued on the matter.

The controversy intensified when the internal issue reached the attention of the Honourable Governor, who is currently abroad. Reportedly displeased, the Governor expressed his disapproval. Following his instructions, the matter was immediately withdrawn.

Earlier, on Monday, 21 July, the Human Resources Department of Bangladesh Bank had issued an office directive that triggered widespread criticism on social media platforms. The instruction included detailed references to wearing formal shoes and modest headscarves or hijabs.

The directive also proposed appointing an official in each department to monitor adherence to the dress code. It further stated that any deviation from the guidelines would be considered a disciplinary violation, with consequences for the concerned staff.

The backlash centred around perceived infringements on personal freedom and excessive interference in personal expression, prompting public debate on the appropriateness of such internal rules in a professional setting.
