Tista Mega-Project Set to Progress, Officials Stress Caution and Thorough Planning
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Water Resources, has reiterated that both the governments of Bangladesh and China remain firmly committed to the implementation of the Tista Mega-Project. However, she clarified that work cannot commence immediately, as verification and evaluation procedures are still ongoing. Consequently, the project will not start within January, though there is no reason for public dismay.
Speaking to journalists on Monday afternoon following an inspection of erosion-prone areas along the Tista River in Tepamdhupur, Taluk Shahbazpur, Kaunia Upazila, Rangpur, Ms Hasan emphasised that patience is essential to ensure the project’s long-term success. The visit also included the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mr Yao Wen.
“Political parties are including commitments to the Tista Mega-Project in their forthcoming election manifestos,” she noted. “But this does not mean work will begin hastily by 26 January. Adequate time is being allowed to ensure the work is conducted thoroughly and effectively.”
Ms Hasan explained that Chinese experts have reviewed the project proposal submitted by Bangladesh. “Public expectations are high, and the Chinese Ambassador has confirmed that the project is being meticulously verified to ensure flawless execution. China is eager to commence work as soon as possible.”
Highlighting the complexity of the project, the Water Resources Advisor said: “The Tista Mega-Project encompasses flood control, riverbank erosion prevention, and irrigation. These multifaceted aspects require careful analysis. Bangladesh maintains a friendly relationship with China, which is a key neighbour. Beyond water management, China has also proposed constructing a large hospital, for which we are grateful.”
Ms Hasan expressed optimism about the project’s future. “The interim government did not abandon this initiative, and political parties remain committed. We must avoid spreading disappointment. Funding allocations are difficult to modify once agreements are in place, so a methodical process ensures the project benefits both nations and the people.”
On the matter of fair water sharing, she said: “Securing equitable water allocation is an ongoing process and a major political issue. Preparatory work has been carried out for both the Ganga and Tista rivers, so that an incoming elected government can proceed without delay.”
Officials present during the inspection included Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen, District Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan, Director of Riverine People Professor Dr Tuhin Wadud, Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Robiul Islam, and representatives from the Tista Bachao Nodi Bachao Sangram Parishad, including President Nazrul Islam Hakkani and Secretary Shafiar Rahman.
Earlier in the day, the delegation inspected the Tista Road and Railway Bridge area, where Robiul Islam highlighted the flow, condition, and challenges of the Tista River across five northern districts. The Advisor later toured the river by boat to assess the current situation firsthand.
