Bangladesh Regret Missed Goal Against China

Facing a powerhouse like China proved a formidable challenge for the Bangladesh women’s football team. Despite a 2-0 defeat against the nine-time Asian champions, the performance of the Bangladeshi side on the field drew widespread attention and praise.

The game, held at Western Sydney Stadium, left the team with a sense of regret, particularly over Rituparna’s missed goal. Midfielder Maria Manda expressed the sentiment candidly: “Of course, there is some disappointment. When you get a chance against such a strong team, converting it would have been a huge boost for us. We have watched her shot on video many times.”

Beyond the scoreline, the focus remained on the team’s overall effort. After a morning training session at Sydney’s Jubilee Stadium, Maria reflected, “We faced a very tough team and gave our absolute best. I feel that, in terms of effort, we succeeded. Conceding only two goals against a nine-time champion is a huge learning experience for us.”

Following the match, the players were exhausted, retreating quickly after dinner to rest. On discussions about post-match bonuses, Maria stated, “We were simply too tired to talk about such things immediately after the game. However, the Federation President encouraged us and emphasised the importance of preparing for our upcoming matches.”

A standout performance came from goalkeeper Mili, whose agility and composure drew praise. Maria noted, “Initially, there was some doubt about how she would perform, but she didn’t let us down. Her performance was excellent, and we had complete confidence in her abilities.”

Looking ahead, Bangladesh will face equally challenging opponents in North Korea and Uzbekistan. Speaking about the next match on 6 March against North Korea, Maria said, “Since we started the first match well, we need to approach the second with the same focus and intensity.” She also offered a note of caution: “No team can be underestimated. Every team in our group is strong, and results ultimately depend on performance on the field. Strong teams can lose, and so-called weaker teams can advance.”

Maria concluded by attributing the team’s achievements to consistent practice and the support of fans, saying, “We practise constantly, and it has paid off. We are especially grateful to all those cheering for us both at home and abroad, who have inspired us to perform at our best.”
