The Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) has formalised an ambitious blueprint for the nation’s international sporting calendar, confirming that a contingent of 202 athletes will represent the country across 26 disciplines at the upcoming 20th Asian Games. The decision was ratified during an executive committee meeting held yesterday, marking a significant commitment to diversifying Bangladesh’s competitive footprint beyond its traditional strongholds.
The 20th Asian Games are scheduled to take place this September and October in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The BOA’s selection encompasses a broad spectrum of sports, ranging from high-profile team events like football and cricket to individual precision disciplines such as archery and shooting.
Furthermore, the committee addressed the 23rd Commonwealth Games, set to be hosted in Scotland during July and August. For this event, Bangladesh will field a leaner, more specialised squad focused on five specific disciplines where the nation has shown consistent developmental promise: athletics, boxing, gymnastics, swimming, and weightlifting.
The executive meeting followed a landmark ceremony in the Trishal military training area of Mymensingh. There, the Chief of Army Staff and President of the BOA, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, laid the foundation stone for the Bangladesh Olympic Complex. This facility, a joint venture between the BOA and the Bangladesh Army, is envisioned as a world-class training hub designed to nurture elite talent.
Addressing the assembly, General Waker-Uz-Zaman emphasised the necessity of collective effort:
“We must work in unison to integrate our youth into the sporting arena. Facilities like this complex are the bedrock upon which our future international success will be built.”
The following table highlights the disparity in scale between the two major campaigns planned for 2026:
| Feature | 20th Asian Games (Japan) | 23rd Commonwealth Games (Scotland) |
|---|---|---|
| Total Disciplines | 26 | 5 |
| Total Athletes | 202 | To be finalised (Estimated <50) |

The 26 sports selected for the Aichi-Nagoya games include:

Team: Basketball, Cricket, Football, Kabaddi, Rugby, Beach Handball, Beach Volleyball.

By sending such a diverse group to Japan, the BOA aims to gauge the country’s progress in emerging sports while maintaining its status in regional favourites like Kabaddi and Hockey.
