Bangladesh Training Cancelled Due to Thunderstorm

Clouds had gathered over Dhaka since the afternoon, casting a grey hue over the city. The national team players, Samit Som and Jamal Bhuiyan, were set to train at Bashundhara Kings Arena, preparing for upcoming international fixtures. However, shortly after the session began, heavy rain accompanied by lightning forced a halt to proceedings.

The Bangladesh team’s Spanish coach, Javier Cabrera, opted against taking any risks with player safety and cancelled the training session. The decision underscores the importance of caution amid severe weather, particularly given the team’s rigorous preparation schedule for critical matches.

Bangladesh’s national team has two significant fixtures on the horizon:

A preparatory match in Vietnam on 26 March

The final Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on 31 March

In anticipation of these matches, the team has been conducting training sessions at Kings Arena, with regular practice over the past two days. Unfortunately, today’s session could not continue due to inclement weather.

Interestingly, while the senior national team’s training was disrupted, the Under-20 (U-20) team continued their practice without interruption. At the National Stadium, the U-20 players followed a normal training schedule in the afternoon, indicating that conditions at other venues remained manageable.

Upcoming Bangladesh Fixtures and Training

Team Match / Event Date Venue Status
Senior Team Preparation Match vs Vietnam 26 March Vietnam (away) Training ongoing
Senior Team Asian Cup Qualifier vs Singapore 31 March Singapore (away) Training disrupted by rain
U-20 Team SAFF U-20 Tournament vs Maldives 24 March Maldives Training proceeded as normal

The national team will resume training as soon as weather conditions improve, aiming to maintain peak physical and tactical readiness for the Asian Cup qualifiers. Coach Cabrera has emphasised that player safety remains the top priority, and indoor or alternative arrangements may be considered if thunderstorms persist.

Meanwhile, the U-20 squad continues their preparation uninterrupted, reflecting a clear distinction in venue safety and weather impact between the senior and junior teams. With both squads focused on upcoming international commitments, careful planning and adaptation to weather conditions remain essential.

The cancellation today serves as a reminder of the unpredictable weather in Dhaka during this season, prompting teams and management to remain flexible in scheduling and to prioritise player welfare above all.
