Uncertainty continues over Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, with the country refusing to accept any “unreasonable” conditions imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday at the Secretariat, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul emphasised that Bangladesh cannot be coerced into playing in India under undue pressure. “We will not be forced to compete in India through unreasonable coercion,” he said.
He added, “If the ICC bows to the Indian board and imposes arbitrary conditions on us, we will not comply. Bangladesh will never accept unreasonable stipulations.”
Nazrul referred to previous instances when the ICC changed match venues for logistical reasons, highlighting the recent decision to relocate matches from Pakistan after India refused to play there. “We have requested a venue change for highly reasonable grounds. Yet no one can compel us to play in India through unfair pressure,” he asserted.
According to reports from AFP, should Bangladesh withdraw from the T20 World Cup, Scotland would take their place. However, the BBC has clarified that no discussions have yet taken place between Cricket Scotland and the ICC regarding such a contingency.
The ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence on 7 February 2026. Citing security concerns, Bangladesh has already informed the ICC twice of its refusal to play in India, requesting that all its matches be relocated to Sri Lanka. Although ICC officials met with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) representatives in Dhaka, no resolution was reached.
While the ICC has not made any formal announcements, cricket-focused websites such as Cricinfo, along with several Indian media outlets, reported on Monday that the ICC has given the BCB a deadline until Wednesday to communicate its final decision. BCB, however, insists no such deadline has been formally imposed.
