A historic chapter is about to be written in Bangladeshi women’s football as the national team prepares to compete in the main stage of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time. The tournament, scheduled from 1–21 March across five venues in three Australian cities, saw the Bangladesh squad arrive in Sydney late on Friday at 12:30 a.m. (Australian time).
Despite the long-haul flight, the players had little time to rest. Just seven hours after landing at Valentine Sports Park, head coach Peter Butler led the team straight into training. By 8:00 a.m., the players, including key figures Afida and Rituparna, were already on the pitch, adjusting to the Australian morning sun. Following the morning session, the squad spent the afternoon in the gym, focusing on strength and conditioning.
In a video message shared by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), goalkeeper coach Masud Ahmed provided an encouraging update on the team’s physical and mental condition:
“While the fatigue of travel is present, there are no injury concerns. Everyone is fully fit. Our primary focus now is acclimatising to the local weather. The first day’s training session was very productive.”
Sydney’s current climate is broadly comparable to Dhaka, with daytime temperatures hovering around 23°C, slightly cooler than Dhaka’s 30°C. Morning and afternoon sessions bring warm sunshine, but coaching staff believe the conditions will not pose any challenges for the Bangladeshi squad.
Valentine Sports Park has impressed the coaching team with its facilities. Masud Ahmed added, “Everything a professional football team needs is available here. Under Peter Butler’s guidance, the players are giving their maximum effort to adapt quickly.”
Ahead of the tournament, Bangladesh will play a preparatory friendly on 25 February at Valentine Sports Club against a local club. This match is expected to be an important opportunity to refine tactics and enhance team cohesion before the main competition.
On 27 February, the team will move from Valentine Sports Park to the official AFC team hotel, marking the start of their centralised camp for the Asian Cup.
