FC Barcelona have been left reeling following the confirmed departure of 18-year-old midfield prodigy Dro Fernández to Paris Saint-Germain. The move has ignited a fresh wave of hostility between the two European giants, with Barcelona President Joan Laporta publicly condemning the circumstances of the transfer as "unpleasant" and a breach of verbal agreements.
Fernández, who celebrated his 18th birthday on 12 January, had been a jewel in the crown of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy since joining at the age of 14. For months, the club’s hierarchy believed a contract extension was a mere formality. According to club sources, a verbal agreement had been reached with the player’s representatives, intended to be signed immediately upon his 18th birthday to secure his long-term future at the Spotify Camp Nou.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, the player’s agent informed head coach Hansi Flick and the board that they would not be honouring the agreement. Instead, Fernández travelled to the French capital on Sunday evening to undergo medical examinations with the Ligue 1 champions.
Hansi Flick, who handed Fernández his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in September, struggled to mask his disappointment during a recent press conference. Flick has been credited with revitalising Barcelona’s reliance on youth, but he hinted at the negative influence of external advisors.
"I put a lot of effort into young players and helping them improve, but there are a lot of people around them," Flick remarked. "There are footballers who are 17 or 18 but have people who make decisions for them. I don’t want to say more."
While Flick promoted the youngster to the senior squad, the midfielder found playing time hard to come by, totalling just 148 minutes across five appearances. Analysts suggest that the tactical shift from Barcelona’s traditional 4-3-3 to Flick’s 4-2-3-1 may have played a role in the player's decision, as he seeks a system more suited to his profile under Luis Enrique at PSG.
Although Fernández possessed a release clause of €6 million, PSG reportedly agreed to pay a sum exceeding €8 million as a "goodwill gesture." Nevertheless, the additional funds have done little to soothe the anger in Catalonia.

The departure of Fernández represents a significant blow to Joan Laporta’s project, which centres on retaining the world's best teenage talents. As the dust settles, the rift between Barcelona and PSG—already strained by previous high-profile transfers—appears wider than ever.
