A dazzling display by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal propelled Barcelona to a vital victory at Elche, allowing the reigning La Liga champions to extend their lead at the summit of the table to four points.
From the outset, 18-year-old Yamal stamped his authority on the match. In the 6th minute, he received a perfectly weighted through ball from Dani Olmo and deftly chipped Elche goalkeeper Iñaki Peña, slotting the ball into an open net to give Barcelona an early advantage.
That opening goal set the tone for the Catalans, who dominated possession and created multiple scoring opportunities. However, Elche responded in the 29th minute when Álvaro Rodríguez capitalised on Barcelona’s high defensive line, racing clear to calmly place the ball into the far corner and restore parity.
Barcelona’s lead was soon restored. In the 40th minute, a precise cutback from Frenkie de Jong found Ferrán Torres, who fired a powerful strike past Peña to make it 2–1.
After the interval, the momentum remained firmly with Barcelona. Yamal repeatedly tested Elche’s right flank, exploiting gaps in their defensive structure. His influence culminated in the 72nd minute when a low pass from the teenager found substitute Marcus Rashford, who tapped in to seal a 3–1 victory.
Yamal’s contribution extended beyond goals; he was instrumental in orchestrating attacks, creating multiple chances, and keeping Elche’s defence under constant pressure.
This triumph marks Barcelona’s 15th win in their last 16 matches across all competitions, sending a resounding message to the rest of La Liga under manager Hansi Flick.
The victory also increases the pressure on Real Madrid, who occupy second place and trail Barcelona by four points. Real Madrid, with a game in hand, are set to host Rayo Vallecano on Sunday in an attempt to narrow the gap.
