Despite a commanding home performance, Barcelona have been eliminated from the Copa del Rey semi-finals, falling short of overturning a daunting first-leg deficit against Atlético Madrid. The Catalan giants secured a 3–0 victory in Tuesday’s second leg at Camp Nou, but the aggregate score of 4–3 favoured the visitors, sending them through to the final.
The first leg, held at Atlético’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium last month, saw Barcelona endure a heavy 4–0 defeat. That result proved too great an obstacle to surmount, despite a spirited comeback effort in front of their home crowd.
From the outset, Barcelona played with relentless attacking intent. In the 29th minute, Marc Bernal broke the deadlock, giving the hosts a vital goal. As the first half drew to a close, Raphinha doubled the advantage from the penalty spot, reigniting hope among the home supporters.
The second half continued in similar fashion, with Bernal scoring his second goal in the 72nd minute to bring the match scoreline to 3–0. At that point, Barcelona were just one goal away from forcing extra time, but Atlético’s resolute defensive organisation proved impenetrable, and the Catalans could not find the breakthrough they desperately needed.
After the match, Raphinha expressed the team’s disappointment:
“Overcoming a 4–0 deficit is never easy, we knew that. Still, the team gave everything we had. We wanted to reach the final, so it’s obviously frustrating not to make it.”
Atlético Madrid’s goalkeeper, Juan Musso, reflected on the intensity of the two-legged tie:
“It was a tough 180 minutes. We went through difficult moments, but in the end, we achieved our objective.”
With this result, Atlético Madrid progress to the Copa del Rey final for the first time since the 2012–13 season, under the guidance of coach Diego Simeone, who will be aiming to add another trophy to his impressive managerial record.
| Team | First Leg (Away/Home) | Second Leg (Home/Away) | Aggregate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atlético Madrid | 4–0 (Home) | 0–3 (Away) | 4–3 |
| Barcelona | 0–4 (Away) | 3–0 (Home) | 3–4 |
Tuesday’s result highlights both Barcelona’s attacking prowess and Atlético’s disciplined defence over the two legs, emphasising how critical a first-leg advantage can be in knockout competitions. Despite the loss, the Catalans showcased resilience and determination, signalling a strong challenge for the remainder of the season.
