Barcelona squandered a golden opportunity to reclaim the top spot in La Liga after a dramatic late defeat to Girona. Fran Beltrán’s decisive strike in the 86th minute handed the home side a 2–1 victory, leaving the Catalan giants to exit the field in disappointment.
The match, held at Girona’s stadium, saw both teams adopt an attacking approach from the outset. Barcelona’s Rafinha and Lamine Yamal were presented with chances early on but were unable to convert, keeping the score goalless through most of the first half.
A key moment arrived during first-half stoppage time when Barcelona was awarded a penalty. Yamal stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his effort struck the post and bounced clear, denying the visitors a crucial lead.
After the interval, Barcelona finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Pau Kuberski headed the ball into the net. Their lead, however, was short-lived. Within two minutes, Thomas Lemar equalised for Girona, restoring parity and swinging the momentum towards the hosts.
From then on, Girona applied relentless pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 86th minute when Fran Beltrán scored with a low, precise shot, sending the home supporters into ecstasy. Despite protests from Barcelona’s players, the goal stood. In added time, Girona’s Joel Roca was shown a red card, but it had no bearing on the result.
The defeat leaves Barcelona second in the La Liga standings with 58 points from 24 matches, two points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid, who occupy the summit with an identical number of games played. Girona, meanwhile, climb to 12th place with 29 points after 24 matches, enjoying a valuable boost to their mid-table position.
| Position | Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Real Madrid | 24 | 60 |
| 2 | Barcelona | 24 | 58 |
| 12 | Girona | 24 | 29 |
Barcelona will now need to regroup quickly if they are to maintain their title challenge, as the race at the top of La Liga remains finely poised. Girona, on the other hand, can take confidence from a hard-fought victory that demonstrated their resilience against one of Spain’s footballing giants.
