London was swept up in the spiritual rhythms of Baul music as celebrated Bangladeshi singer Sharmin Dipu delivered a spellbinding performance at “Baul Festival London 2026”, organised by Bangla Craze UK. The festival, recently held at the Colosseum Suite in London, drew an enthusiastic crowd of expatriate Bangladeshis and music lovers, transforming the evening into a vibrant celebration of folk heritage, philosophy and shared cultural memory.
Sharmin Dipu’s soulful voice and emotive delivery stood at the heart of the programme. Her performances, rooted in the mystic traditions of Bengal’s Baul philosophy, resonated deeply with audiences in the multicultural setting of London. The festival demonstrated that Baul music—centred on humanism, spiritual freedom and inner truth—continues to transcend borders and generations.
Alongside Sharmin Dipu, the stage featured an impressive line-up of Baul and folk artistes, including Sagar Baul, Beli Afroze, Baul M Hossain, Sazzad Noor, Bannya Talukder, Baul Ikram Uddin, Rana, as well as several UK-based Bangladeshi performers. Their collective performances added diversity and depth to the evening, presenting different interpretations and regional flavours of Baul and folk traditions.
Although the festival was a ticketed event, organisers noted that the warmth and spontaneous participation of the audience elevated it beyond a conventional concert. Faisal Ahmed, Chief Executive Officer of Bangla Craze UK, explained that the organisation has been hosting such cultural programmes regularly. “Our aim is to showcase Bangladesh’s Baul music and cultural heritage in the heart of London. Each year, the response grows stronger, reaffirming the community’s emotional connection to its roots,” he said.
Expressing her own feelings, Sharmin Dipu described the performance as both humbling and emotional. She noted that presenting Baul music in a global city like London was a source of immense pride. “Baul is not merely a genre—it is a philosophy of humanity and the soul. The attentiveness of the audience here proves that culture knows no boundaries,” she remarked.
The instrumental accompaniment was provided by London-based Bengali musicians, including Tanim, Hasan, Rizan and Samrat, whose skilled performances ensured an authentic and resonant soundscape throughout the evening.
Sharmin Dipu remains one of the most talked-about voices of her generation, enjoying equal popularity in Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. While she performs across playback, modern, folk and Nazrul music, her greatest acclaim lies in folk traditions. Notably, alongside her musical career, she is also professionally engaged in the legal profession in London, embodying a rare blend of artistic devotion and professional accomplishment.
