The Indian cricket team was scheduled to tour Bangladesh in August for a six-match bilateral series, consisting of both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). However, after weeks of uncertainty, the series was officially postponed in July, leaving Bangladesh without high-profile competitive matches ahead of the Asia Cup.
To bridge this competitive gap, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) arranged a replacement series against the Netherlands.
The cancellation of India’s tour has not only affected Bangladesh’s cricketing preparation but has also led to a significant financial shortfall for the BCB.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul admitted: “India was supposed to come for this series, but they did not. As a result, we are facing some financial losses. Still, we decided to host this series. After playing Sri Lanka and Pakistan, we wanted to avoid a gap, so we brought in the Netherlands.”
Bulbul emphasised that while financial implications were undeniable, the board prioritised team preparation:“We lost to the Netherlands in the last ODI World Cup in Kolkata. For us, the bigger issue than financial gain is preparation.”
The Netherlands, therefore, has been seen as an ideal opponent to test Bangladesh ahead of major tournaments.
The BCB president also underlined that Bangladesh’s long-term preparation was already in motion: “We are playing good cricket. Our preparations for the Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup have already begun.”
Series Overview
| Planned Series (Cancelled) | Replacement Series (Hosted) |
| India vs Bangladesh | Bangladesh vs Netherlands |
| 3 ODIs + 3 T20Is (6 matches total) | Format adjusted to maintain match practice |
| Major financial revenue expected | Organised mainly for team preparation |
| Cancelled in July 2025 | Confirmed August 2025 |
This cancellation may have cost the BCB financially, but the proactive arrangement of a series against the Netherlands reflects the board’s commitment to keeping the national side competitively sharp ahead of major tournaments.
