The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has moved to fill a significant void in the national sporting calendar. Following the conclusion of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the nation’s top cricketers find themselves in an unexpected period of hiatus. Due to persistent security concerns, Bangladesh will not participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. This absence follows a deadlock where the International Cricket Council (ICC) declined the BCB’s request for a venue change, leaving both the board and the country’s passionate fanbase deeply disheartened.
Beyond the competitive setback, the exclusion has resulted in substantial financial losses for the players. To mitigate this and keep the cricketing spirit alive during the February World Cup window, the BCB has conceptualised a high-stakes domestic one-day tournament.
The proposed tournament will feature four teams composed of national team regulars and those on the fringes of international selection. While the T20 World Cup occupies the global stage, the BCB is prioritising the 50-over format to prepare for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan in March.
Originally, the board had scheduled the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), a first-class competition, for February. However, the Cricket Operations Department has opted to postpone the longer format until May, just ahead of the two-match Test series against Pakistan.
The initiative received a significant boost following a high-level meeting between the Sports Adviser, Professor Asif Nazrul, and BCB President Aminul Islam. Reports suggest the government is keen on ensuring that national athletes remain active and financially supported during this fallow period. To address the loss of World Cup earnings, the BCB has pledged “generous financial incentives” for participants.
Details regarding team names, venues, and sponsorship are expected to be finalised within the coming days. Shahriar Nafees, Manager of Cricket Operations, confirmed that the Tournament Committee is currently refining the logistics.

The Secretary of the National Sports Council, Md. Mahbub-ul-Alam, noted that an official announcement is imminent. For a nation currently sidelined from the global T20 stage, this domestic showdown offers a vital lifeline for player form and public engagement.
