BCB President Accused of Abuse of Power by Tamim

Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections were initially announced for 4 October, the official schedule has yet to be released by the Election Commission. In the meantime, former players and sports organisers had already submitted nomination forms within the deadline after being selected as councillors by district and divisional sports associations.

However, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul rejected the applications of those associations that did not nominate councillors through the ad-hoc committee. In addition, instead of the Chief Executive’s usual authority, Bulbul personally signed off on the nominations from the ad-hoc committee. This move has stirred heated debate over the past two days.

On Sunday, several district and divisional sports associations held a press conference protesting what they described as government interference and abuse of presidential power in the BCB election process.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was present at the event and voiced strong criticism of the current president’s actions.

Tamim raised serious concerns about Bulbul’s role, saying:

  • “Bulbul bhai had earlier admitted that he has no idea about how an election works. He knows nothing—his understanding is zero. If that is the case, then how did he sign a letter stating that the previous councillors would be excluded?”
  • “He declared that only the ad-hoc committee’s nominees would be accepted, and said new forms would be sent. He personally signed this letter. In all previous cases, such letters were signed by the Chief Executive. According to the constitution, once the committee is formed, he cannot sign such documents. Under what authority did he send this directive to the Deputy Commissioners?”

Tamim further emphasised:

  • “I only want a transparent election. The result is not my concern. Whether I win or lose is secondary—my only demand is a fair and transparent process.”

In the same press conference, Tamim also addressed speculation about his retirement:

  • “I don’t need to retire officially. If I am elected, I will no longer play cricket. Only in the case of charity matches might I consider playing again.”
