The recent tension between Bangladesh’s cricket and football governing bodies reached a new height when the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) officially wrote to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) seeking clarification regarding comments made at a cricket event. The controversy began when councillor Asif Akbar made disparaging remarks about football and footballers during the BCB Cricket Conference, sparking widespread criticism across social media and the sporting community.
BFF President Tabith Awal demanded an explanation from BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul, questioning whether Asif’s remarks represented the official stance of the cricket board. The letter asked the BCB to clarify its organisational position and to state whether any corrective action would be taken.
On Saturday, 15 November, the BCB formally responded.
In the official reply—signed by BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul—the cricket board clarified that Asif Akbar’s remarks did not reflect BCB policy.
The letter stated:
“The views expressed during the Bangladesh Cricket Conference were entirely personal to Mr Asif Akbar. They should not be regarded as the official position of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.”
This statement makes it clear that the BCB distances itself completely from the controversial remarks and does not endorse any criticism directed at football or footballers.
Acknowledging the sensitivity of the matter, the BCB added a formal expression of regret:
“If the remarks in question have caused any distress or confusion among the football community, players or supporters, I express my sincere apologies.”
This gesture was seen as an attempt to ease tension between the two major sporting bodies of the country.
The BCB also mentioned Asif Akbar’s role as a councillor, emphasising that individual members do not speak on behalf of the board unless authorised. This clarification addresses the public perception that had since grown, questioning institutional attitudes toward football.

With both organisations addressing the issue formally, sports analysts hope this incident will not damage the long-standing relationship between the two bodies. Instead, they expect the focus to shift back to the development of both cricket and football—two pillars of Bangladesh’s sporting identity.
