“BCB Warns Over NSC Election Move”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed deep concern over the National Sports Council’s (NSC) recent decision to form an investigative committee into last year’s October board elections. The BCB fears that such government action could be perceived as “external interference” by the International Cricket Council (ICC), potentially jeopardising both Bangladesh’s ICC membership and the stability of its cricket administration.

In a statement released yesterday, the BCB emphasised that the current board was democratically elected following its own constitution and has been managing all cricketing operations transparently since taking office. The sudden announcement of an NSC investigative committee, the board noted, raises questions about its autonomy and governance.

“The decision to form a committee after our democratic election undermines the independence and stability of the BCB,” the statement read.

The BCB highlighted that, as a full ICC member, it operates under the ICC’s Global Governance Framework, which strictly prohibits third-party or governmental interference in the affairs of an elected cricket board. Any such intervention could trigger ICC governance and compliance procedures, potentially leading to investigations or disciplinary action.

Governance and Compliance Overview

Aspect Detail
ICC Membership Full member with voting rights and global cricket responsibilities
Election Legitimacy Board democratically elected per BCB constitution
Government Intervention Strictly prohibited under ICC rules
Potential Consequences ICC investigation, disciplinary action, reputational impact
BCB Action Seeking dialogue with NSC before formal ICC communication

The statement also noted that the BCB has already held informal discussions with senior ICC officials. Feedback from these conversations suggested that any interference in a democratically elected board could have negative consequences for Bangladesh cricket internationally.

For the broader interests of cricket in Bangladesh, the BCB stressed the need for a careful and measured approach. Before formally contacting the ICC or initiating any compliance procedure, the board intends to engage in direct dialogue with the NSC to seek clarification on the purpose and potential implications of the NSC gazette.

The BCB hopes that the NSC will respect the autonomy of the organisation and act in a way that preserves the institutional dignity of the cricket board. Furthermore, the board has urged swift resolution of the matter to maintain Bangladesh cricket’s international reputation, stability, and continued progress.

“We request that the issue be resolved in a manner that safeguards the independence, continuity, and stability of Bangladesh cricket, while protecting our position on the global stage,” the BCB statement concluded.

The board’s measured response underscores its commitment to transparent governance and its determination to balance national oversight with international obligations.
