BCCI Elections Set to Precede BCB Polls

Preparations for the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections have recently begun. Senior Vice-President of the BCB, Nazmul Abedin Fahim, announced in Sylhet that the elections for the board of directors and BCB President are scheduled for October. Similarly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also announced its own elections.

Rumours suggest that the BCB elections could take place on 4 October, while the BCCI elections are set to occur prior to the BCB polls.

  • BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM): 28 September, Mumbai Headquarters
  • Coinciding Event: Asia Cup final

It is expected that the BCCI elections could be held on the same day as the AGM.

According to Debajit Saikia, current BCCI Secretary, elections will be held for the following posts:

Position Current Holder Notes
President Acting: Rajiv Shukla May contest for full term
Vice-President TBD Election scheduled
Secretary Debajit Saikia May continue despite elections
Joint Secretary Rohan Ghas Desai Expected to serve another term
Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia Expected to serve another term

Additionally, the AGM agenda includes the formation of the IPL and Women’s IPL Governing Councils.

Background and Current Officeholders

  • Debajit Saikia initially served as Joint Secretary and took over as Secretary after Jay Shah became ICC President.
  • Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and Joint Secretary Rohan Ghas Desai are expected to continue for another term.
  • Although there will be an election for the President, acting President Rajiv Shukla is expected to run.

Previously, Roger Binny, a former World Cup winner, held the BCCI Presidency. As he surpassed the age of 70, he vacated the position in July in accordance with the board’s constitution.

The BCCI election will thus precede the BCB elections, marking a significant period of administrative transitions in both major cricket boards of the subcontinent.
