Begumganj Cricket Dispute Ends In Murder

In Begumganj Upazila of Noakhali, a violent dispute over a cricket match with a wager ended tragically on Friday evening, leaving 20-year-old Md. Arif Hossain dead and two others seriously injured. The incident occurred at around 7:30 pm in Rugurampur village of Ward 3, Jirtali Union.

Md. Arif Hossain, the son of Siraj Mia from Bancharam Bari, Kutubpur village, had recently returned home after working at his uncle’s factory in Dhaka for several weeks. According to local police and eyewitnesses, the conflict arose when a group of youths played cricket for money in the backyard of a local residence.

During Thursday afternoon’s match, a verbal altercation broke out between two groups. Arif attempted to mediate the situation, but tensions escalated. That same evening, a local youth named Prahim reportedly assaulted Arif at a nearby tea stall. The matter was temporarily resolved by local residents, but the conflict reignited the following day.

On Friday evening, Prahim and several associates attacked Arif in Rugurampur. Arif was stabbed in the left side of his chest, sustaining fatal injuries. At the same time, two other young men—his cousins Umair (21) and Omar (22)—were also attacked and injured. Local residents rushed the victims to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital, where doctors pronounced Arif dead upon arrival.

Arif’s elder brother, Akil Hossain, told reporters, “When my brother tried to intervene in the cricket dispute, Prahim (21) and Saiful, along with others, assaulted him on Thursday evening. On Friday, they again attacked him and also stabbed my cousins Umair and Omar.”

Begumganj police officer-in-charge, Md. Shamsuzzaman, confirmed that the murder was linked to a conflict over a wagered cricket game. He stated, “The police inspected the scene promptly. Necessary legal measures will be taken once a formal complaint is submitted.”

Locals have expressed concern over the growing frequency of violent disputes connected to gambling in sports, warning that similar incidents may recur if preventive measures are not implemented. The police have initiated a preliminary investigation and are seeking to apprehend the attackers.

The tragedy underscores the dangers of unresolved local disputes escalating into lethal violence, highlighting the need for timely community mediation and stronger law enforcement presence during such events.
