Ben Stokes Suffers Severe Facial Injuries During Practice

Published: 07 Feb 2026, 05:42 am

England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, has suffered significant facial injuries after being struck by a cricket ball whilst observing a training session. The 34-year-old all-rounder was reportedly standing near the boundary ropes watching his teammates and members of the Durham County Cricket Club practice when a stray ball hit him with immense force.

The impact resulted in severe lacerations to the right side of his face, significant swelling and bruising around his eye, and a fractured or bloodied nose. Despite the grisly nature of the injury, Stokes maintained his trademark resilience and wit. He took to Instagram to share a photograph of his bloodied countenance, captioned with a laughing emoji and the remark: "You should see what the ball looks like."

A Blow to Rehabilitation

This incident is a cruel setback for Stokes, who was already in the midst of a rigorous rehabilitation programme. He has been sidelined since the conclusion of the final Ashes Test in Sydney last month due to a persistent adductor injury.

Before this latest accident, Stokes was scheduled to travel to Abu Dhabi later this month. He was set to join Andrew Flintoff as an informal mentor and coach for the England Lions. Having stepped away from white-ball cricket following the 2023 ODI World Cup, Stokes is not part of the squad for the T20 World Cup beginning this Saturday.

The Road to Recovery: Key Milestones

Stokes remains a foundational figure in English cricket, having played pivotal roles in two World Cup victories. His return to the international arena is highly anticipated, with the home Test series against New Zealand in June earmarked as his comeback target.

Leadership Continuity

Despite the disappointing 4-1 defeat in the recent Ashes series in Australia, Stokes has reaffirmed his commitment to the captaincy. He has expressed his desire to continue his aggressive "Bazball" partnership with head coach Brendon McCullum, aiming to rebuild the Test side's dominance starting this summer. Fans and officials alike will be monitoring his recovery closely, hoping that this freak accident does not delay his return to the helm of the national side.
