Big Bash struggles for survival, Babar Azam returns to Pakistan

Babar Azam, Pakistan’s star batsman, has concluded his Big Bash League (BBL) campaign, departing Sydney Sixers to answer the call of the national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup. His exit means he will miss not only the remaining regular-season matches but also the potential BBL final.

Sydney Sixers are scheduled to face Hobart Hurricanes on Friday night. A victory in this encounter would provide them another opportunity to challenge Perth Scorchers, who have already secured their place in the final on Sunday.

Babar’s early departure was driven by the national selectors’ insistence on his swift return to prepare for the ICC Cricket World Cup. As a result, he will not feature in any further matches for the Sixers this season.

This season, Babar’s batting strike rate was a subject of intense debate among fans and pundits. Critics argued that, at times, he appeared to prioritise preserving his wicket over accelerating the team’s scoring, potentially costing the Sixers crucial runs. A notable incident further fuelled the discussion: during one match, teammate Steve Smith declined to take a single, after which Babar reached the boundary but was alleged not to acknowledge Smith’s gesture. However, both players resolved the misunderstanding, subsequently batting together in the next two matches. Unfortunately, Babar managed only a single run across those innings.

Before leaving, Babar expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sixers’ supporters and team. He stated:
“First and foremost, I want to thank Sydney Sixers. Thanks to all the players, coaches, and staff. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.”

He added:
“Regrettably, I must now fulfil my national duties, which requires me to leave the team. I take with me many wonderful memories, immense joy, and numerous positive experiences. My time here has been truly remarkable.”

Babar’s tenure in the Big Bash, though brief, showcased his skill and professionalism. Despite mixed performances and occasional controversy, his presence brought excitement and attention to the Sixers’ campaign, leaving an indelible mark on fans and teammates alike.
