The political landscape in Jhenaidah has been rocked by a dramatic act of public protest, as a dedicated activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formally severed ties with the organisation through a traditional act of penance. Sakib Hossain, a security guard and a committed grassroots worker for the Kaliganj Upazila unit, was filmed performing “Nake Khot”—the symbolic act of rubbing one’s nose against the ground—to express his absolute disillusionment with the party’s recent candidate selection for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency.
The viral incident, which occurred behind the Sonali Bank building in Kaliganj, was triggered by the BNP central command’s decision to nominate Rashed Khan for the upcoming elections. Mr Khan, a former General Secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, only recently defected to the BNP. Local activists view his sudden elevation as a betrayal of the “vanguard” leaders who remained loyal to the party during its most arduous periods of political suppression.
Mr Hossain, visibly emotional during his public declaration, stated that the constituency already possessed three “heavyweight” aspirants who had shared the hardships of the grassroots for years. “Rashed Khan is a stranger to the people of Kaliganj. He was never a part of our struggle,” he lamented. He further warned that even with the “Sheaf of Paddy” (Dhaner Sheesh) symbol, the local electorate would likely reject an “imported” candidate. His act of penance serves as a stark metaphor for the “shame” he feels regarding the leadership’s failure to value local dedication.

Supporting these sentiments, Iliyas Rahman Mithu, the former Joint Convenor of the Upazila BNP, noted that the rank and file are currently “drowned in disappointment.” He emphasised that the general voters in Kaliganj prefer leaders who have stood by them during times of peril. According to Mithu, the disenfranchisement of dedicated local candidates has left thousands of workers like Sakib heartbroken, potentially jeopardising the party’s electoral machinery in the region.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation on social media regarding the importance of “meritocracy and loyalty” within political parties. As the election approaches, the BNP high command faces the difficult task of reconciling with its aggrieved local base, many of whom have vowed to abstain from the polls unless their indigenous leaders are reinstated.
