A serious allegation has emerged against local activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, involving demands for extortion from traders at the new building of the Krishi Market. Following the incident, shutters were locked on the market premises, prompting traders to stage a sit-in protest in front of the building from Wednesday morning (13 August).

By 2:00 PM, no resolution had been reached, and the situation in the area remained tense under a heavy police presence.

Trader’s Testimony
Local trader Md Asad alleged that individuals claiming to be the market’s “Secretary” and “President” led an attack on the premises along with outsiders.

“They ordered all shops to be closed. The incident was orchestrated by local BNP leaders and activists. The market is now completely shut, and we are staging a demonstration in front of it. Administration officials are present, but they keep urging both parties to settle the matter at the police station. We refuse to negotiate with outsiders, extortionists, or opportunists,” he said.

Claims of Daily Extortion

Market Details Figures

According to Asad, the extortionists demand between Tk 70 and Tk 80 daily from each shop, along with unlawful electricity fees.
