BNP Activists Accused of Seizing Government Rice from Poor Women

In Ullashi Union of Sharsha Upazila, Jashore, several local activists allegedly affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have been accused of forcibly seizing sacks of rice distributed to extremely poor women under a government food aid programme (VGD).

The incident occurred on Thursday, 31 July, in the Dhalda Mor area of Rampur Dhalda village. Although police intervention led to the recovery of six sacks of rice, no legal action has yet been initiated against the accused.

All four are reportedly close to Aminur Rahman Neda, the Vice President of Sharsha Upazila BNP.

Testimonies from Victims

Several women, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared their distress:

“We received three sacks of rice each from the Union Parishad. But when we reached Dhalda Mor, they blocked our path. We were forced to give up one sack each. They shouted abuse if we protested.”

Another woman said:

“If the government’s relief is being looted under threat, where can we go? They are snatching food from the mouths of the poor.”

Law Enforcement Response

K.M. Robiul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Sharsha Police Station, confirmed:

“No formal complaint has been filed yet. However, police visited the scene, and we’ve heard the accused returned the rice after news of the police operation spread. We advise speaking directly with the Union Parishad administrator for more details.”

This incident has sparked public outcry, especially given the vulnerability of the aid recipients. Rights groups and civil society activists are calling for proper investigation and prosecution to ensure that government relief reaches its intended beneficiaries without fear or coercion.
