BNP Leader Seen in ‘VIP’ Cell with Cigarette Sparks Controversy

In Gosairhat Upazila, Shariatpur, allegations have surfaced against Officer-in-Charge (OC) Maksud Alam following the arrest of a former BNP leader, who is reported to have been given special privileges in police custody.

It is alleged that the detainee paid for financial favours, resulting in a bed being brought from the barracks to create a “VIP” setup inside the lock-up. Additionally, he was reportedly allowed to use a mobile phone while in custody.

Several photographs of the detainee in this setup circulated on social media, prompting widespread criticism regarding police ethics and accountability. Senior police officials have assured that the matter will be investigated thoroughly, and necessary action will be taken.

According to local police sources, Liton Howlader was brought to the station separately from other detainees and placed in a room with alleged special facilities. Photographs later emerged showing him relaxing on a bed with a cigarette in hand while speaking on a mobile phone, captured secretly by an unknown individual.

OC Maksud Alam explained: “Liton Howlader had come to the station seeking a meeting with me regarding another bail case. Since he was also a convicted accused in a separate case, he was re-arrested. He claimed to be unwell, so I instructed that he be kept in the lock-up.”

When asked about the alleged bed and mobile phone privileges, OC Alam stated: “I do not know who arranged these facilities. If someone has done so, I will investigate. People make mistakes, including myself. Next to our lock-up is a primary medical centre where sick detainees are kept if necessary.”

While OC Alam denied intentionally providing special privileges, he requested the matter not be reported in the media.

Tanvir Hossain, Additional Superintendent of Police (Gosairhat Circle), commented: “If a detainee is unwell, standard procedure allows them to be placed in a hospital under police supervision for treatment. The matter of mobile phone use inside the lock-up will be investigated. We will review CCTV footage and interview others to establish the facts. Legal action will follow if the allegations are confirmed.”

This incident has sparked significant public debate over police conduct, detainee rights, and accountability within law enforcement in Shariatpur.
