BNP Says Attack on Sharif Hadi Part of Conspiracy

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has described the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, independent candidate for Dhaka-8 and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, on Friday afternoon as part of a far-reaching sinister plan. In a statement signed by senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party noted that Hadi was critically injured after being shot by wayward assailants and is currently receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The BNP expressed deep concern over the brutal and inhumane attack, condemning it in the strongest terms.

The statement emphasised that the assault on Hadi was a deliberate attempt to disrupt the electoral environment. BNP described the incident as an act of terrorism intended to create fear and panic within society for the benefit of those orchestrating it. The party highlighted that certain groups in the country are employing such violent acts to achieve narrow political objectives and advance their own interests. By spreading fear and intimidation, the attackers are attempting to fulfil their goals at the expense of public safety and societal stability.

The BNP statement further noted that during July–August 2024, a conspiratorial group sought to obstruct the progress of the student and public movements aimed at ensuring the victory of democracy. The serious injury of Sharif Osman Hadi is seen as a cruel manifestation of this subversive activity. The party urged citizens to remain vigilant to thwart the hidden schemes of such disruptors and protect democratic processes from sabotage.

Moreover, the statement stressed the importance of unity among all political parties, activists, and citizens to safeguard democracy, protect the right to vote, and ensure the safety of life and property across the country. Otherwise, opportunistic elements could destabilise the nation and threaten its very existence. The BNP demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the attack on Hadi, while also expressing heartfelt wishes for his speedy recovery.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among political circles and the general public. Planned acts of violence prior to elections are deemed entirely unacceptable. The government, law enforcement agencies, and health authorities are actively monitoring the situation and taking all necessary steps. Relevant authorities are fully prepared to maintain a peaceful electoral environment and ensure that the upcoming election proceeds safely, fairly, and without disruption.
