BNP Warns Against Exploitation of Islamic Attire

Published: 12 Feb 2026, 06:03 am

In a significant pre-election briefing on Wednesday afternoon, Mahdi Amin, the spokesperson for the BNP’s Election Management Committee and Advisor to the Chairman, raised alarms regarding a peculiar trend observed across the country. He alleged that there has been a sudden, unusual surge in the mass production of burqas and niqabs, expressing fears that these garments might be weaponised to facilitate electoral fraud through identity concealment.

Balancing Religious Sensitivity with Vigilance

Mr Amin was careful to navigate the delicate intersection of religious values and electoral security. He emphasised that the BNP, as a party that upholds Islamic values, maintains the highest respect for women’s modesty and the cultural significance of the burqa and niqab in Bangladesh.

However, he warned that this "sacred attire" must not be misappropriated by individuals attempting to cast fraudulent ballots under false identities. He called upon election officials and the public to be vigilant against any attempts to use religious clothing as a tactical disguise for "proxy voting."

Proposed Verification Protocols

To ensure the integrity of the vote without compromising the dignity of female voters, Mr Amin proposed a specific verification procedure. He suggested that whenever a doubt arises regarding a voter's identity, the individual should be required to briefly reveal their face for verification—similar to the protocols used for National ID (NID) or Hajj and Umrah documentation.

To maintain cultural propriety, he insisted that this process must be conducted exclusively by female officials.

Proposed Security Protocol for Identity Verification

Protocol StepImplementation Detail
Verification OfficialMust be a female Presiding Officer, Assistant, or Polling Agent.
Verification MethodBrief unveiling of the face to match the voter's NID photograph.
Privacy StandardsConducted in a manner that respects the voter's modesty (Abru).
ApplicabilityTriggered in cases of suspicious identity or inconsistent documentation.
Reference StandardAdherence to existing NID, Passport, and Pilgrimage security norms.

A Call for National Unity and Participation

Mr Amin underscored that Tarique Rahman, the BNP Chairman, remains steadfastly committed to establishing and protecting women's rights within society. He urged all democracy-loving political factions to reject violence and instead foster an atmosphere of peaceful coexistence and mutual cordiality.

"The overwhelming tide of popular support for the BNP is undeniable," Mr Amin stated, claiming that a "historic victory" for the forces of democracy is imminent. He concluded by inviting every citizen to arrive at the polling centres as early as possible on Thursday morning. "Let this election be a victory for the people of Bangladesh. Let us join the unstoppable procession of democracy and celebrate an unforgettable triumph."
