The Chief Adviser’s office has formally requested the Election Commission to complete all preparations for holding the national parliamentary elections in February 2026, just before the start of Ramadan. This marks the official commencement of the election process, even though six months remain. Candidates who have already confirmed their nominations have actively begun campaigning, while others are eagerly awaiting the green light to finalise their candidature.

BNP’s Position and Candidate Selection Process

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is currently leading the political field. As the largest political party at this moment, BNP has a substantial number of potential candidates. Many have already started strengthening ties with constituents in their respective constituencies well ahead of the election.

Several senior BNP leaders, speaking on condition of anonymity, shared insights into the party’s nomination approach:

  • Multiple candidates per constituency is a natural occurrence for a large party like BNP.
  • Selecting final candidates is the most critical task, with several surveys already conducted, and a third round ongoing.
  • Around 70 to 80 senior and student wing leaders, including Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, have their candidatures virtually confirmed.
  • To finalise other candidates, the party’s high command is relying on survey-based evaluations.
  • Consideration is also being given to reserving some seats for allied parties that have stood alongside BNP during prolonged movements.

Voter Engagement and Candidate Qualities

BNP emphasises that winning votes requires earning voter trust, necessitating significant effort in campaigning and voter outreach. After the mass uprisings, voters prefer candidates of certain calibre and integrity; nominating the wrong candidates could jeopardise election results.

Political analysts stress the importance of candidates’ connection with the public and youth, recommending that nomination decisions prioritise dedication, honesty, and proven qualifications, especially contributions over the last 15 years of political struggle.

Changing Political Landscape and Election Dynamics

Analysts note that the political arena has become more open over the past year, making it difficult to predict outcomes or strategies in advance. This unpredictability may cause political parties to make errors, especially if experienced advisers are absent. Despite a party’s popularity, unacceptable candidates can cost them votes.

Success will favour those who field credible and widely accepted candidates.

Expert Commentary

Professor Kazi Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman of Dhaka University’s Department of Political Science told Jugantor:

  • Traditional election campaigning methods will shift, with social media playing a dominant role.
  • The lack of an established framework to regulate social media influence poses a significant challenge for both the government and the Election Commission.
  • Candidate nominations must bring innovation.
  • Unlike previous elections, financial power or professional status alone will no longer guarantee candidacy.
  • Priority will be given to candidates connected with the masses and youth, and those who have actively participated in street movements.

BNP’s Preparedness and Other Parties’ Activities

BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said:

“Potential BNP candidates are actively preparing across all parliamentary constituencies nationwide. BNP is fully prepared for the upcoming general election. Everyone is intensifying preparations from their respective positions.”

He added that after three consecutive elections were denied to the people, voter enthusiasm is notably high. BNP intends to nominate self-sacrificing and more widely accepted popular leaders, ensuring thorough vetting to select broadly acceptable candidates.

Nomination Updates from Allied Parties

  • Jamaat-e-Islami has already announced potential candidates for 296 constituencies, with nominees actively engaged in election-related activities locally.
  • Islami Andolan Bangladesh has begun interviewing candidates, covering Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, and Rajshahi divisions.
  • Gana Adhikar Parishad has declared candidates for 36 constituencies in the first phase.
  • Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis has announced candidates for 223 constituencies.
  • The newly formed Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), led by coordinators of recent mass uprisings, is actively preparing for elections with at least 40 prospective candidates maintaining grassroots contact.

Summary Table of Nomination and Preparation Status
