Authorities in Los Angeles County have confirmed the discovery of human remains in the debris of one of the catastrophic wildfires that ravaged parts of the city and surrounding areas in January 2025. The recovery, made more than six months after the infernos were extinguished, brings the official death toll to 31.
The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME) released a statement on Tuesday, confirming that its Special Operations Response Team (SORT) had responded to Altadena, a community in Los Angeles County, following reports of possible human remains.
“SORT investigated and determined the remains were human,” the statement read.
“The death toll related to the wildfires is now 31.”
The identity of the latest victim has not yet been confirmed, and efforts are underway to determine the person’s name through forensic analysis.
The twin wildfires that broke out in early January 2025 burned uncontrollably for over three weeks, sweeping through:
Thousands of structures, including luxury homes and historical buildings, were reduced to ashes, prompting a mass evacuation and widespread power outages.
| Fire Event | Start Date | Duration | Primary Areas Affected | Structures Destroyed |
| Fire #1 | 3 January 2025 | ~3 weeks | Pacific Palisades, Malibu | Thousands |
| Fire #2 | 5 January 2025 | ~3 weeks | Altadena and surrounding foothills | Significant |
Authorities are still working to determine the cause of the fires, with electrical infrastructure, particularly power lines, emerging as a possible culprit. Investigators from the fire department and federal agencies have been examining:
So far, no official conclusion has been released.
While rebuilding efforts are underway, especially in the affluent Pacific Palisades region, large areas remain charred and uninhabitable. County officials estimate that full restoration in some locations may take several years, given the scale of destruction and infrastructure loss.
| Category | Details |
| Confirmed Deaths | 31 (including the latest remains found) |
| Unknown Victims | Ongoing identification for latest remains |
| Properties Destroyed | Thousands across three regions |
| Primary Areas Affected | Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Altadena |
| Recovery Status | Partial rebuilding underway; many areas pending |
| Cause of Fires | Under investigation; power lines suspected |
As Los Angeles continues its long path to recovery, the discovery of another victim has reignited concerns about emergency response times, infrastructure safety, and the climate-driven intensity of recent wildfire seasons. The city and its surrounding county remain on high alert, with fire prevention and disaster readiness at the forefront of public policy discussions.
