A passenger aircraft suffered a dramatic engine explosion over Nigeria on Wednesday, causing panic among travellers. Thanks to the skill and composure of the flight crew, however, there were no casualties, and the plane executed a safe emergency landing.
The incident occurred at 07:24 local time when a Boeing 737-700 operated by Nigerian carrier Arik Air departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, bound for Port Harcourt. Shortly after reaching a cruising altitude of 27,000 feet, one of the aircraft’s engines emitted a loud, explosive noise.
A total of 80 passengers and crew were on board. Despite the alarming blast, the pilots remained calm and immediately initiated emergency procedures. The aircraft was diverted to a nearby airport in neighbouring Benin, where it landed safely at 08:05 local time. All passengers disembarked without injury.
Engineering teams at the Benin airport conducted an initial inspection of the damaged engine. According to the Aviation Safety Network, several engine blades had fractured, causing internal damage and triggering the explosion. The precise reason for the blade failure remains under investigation.
Arik Air issued a formal apology to passengers and confirmed in a joint statement with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority that a full investigation into the engine failure would commence promptly.
