Tensions flared inside the Bogura District Election Office on Monday as two senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders became embroiled in a physical altercation while submitting nomination papers for the upcoming Bogura-6 (Sadar) by-election. The confrontation took place in the presence of the party’s nominated candidate, Rezaul Karim Badsha, prompting a stern response from the Election Commission (EC).
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam warned that any violation of the Code of Conduct or engagement in criminal activity during the electoral process would be met with stringent legal action. Speaking in a recent interview at his office, he emphasised that the electoral body will not tolerate disorderly behaviour at any stage of the by-election.
The clash reportedly involved Ali Azgar Talukdar Hena, former general secretary of Bogura district BNP, and Sheikh Taha Uddin Nahin, the party’s vice-general secretary. The incident occurred while the two officials submitted the nomination documents of their party’s candidate for the vacant seat left by Tarique Rahman’s relinquishment.
Addressing the episode, the commissioner noted that any disruption during the pre-election period falls under the ambit of the electoral Code of Conduct. “Particularly between the allocation of electoral symbols and the publication of the gazette notification, any untoward incident will be dealt with under the prevailing Election Laws and Penal Code,” he explained.
He further highlighted the role of field-level Executive Magistrates, who are empowered to take immediate action if complaints are received or offences occur after the election schedule is announced.
According to the official timetable, voting for the Bogura-6 by-election is scheduled for Thursday, 9 April, from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm without interruption. The nomination submission deadline was 2 March, followed by verification on 5 March. Appeals may be filed between 6–10 March, with appeals being resolved on 11 March. Candidate withdrawals must be completed by 14 March, and electoral symbols will be allocated on 15 March, ahead of the scheduled polling.
