Bogura Records Season’s Lowest Temperature as Winter Intensifies

Bogura is currently experiencing the harshest phase of winter this season, with dense fog and biting cold disrupting daily life. The city’s residents, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds, are facing significant hardship. Many have been seen huddling in the streets, wrapped in heavy clothing and attempting to keep warm by lighting small fires using straw and discarded paper. Until the sun appears, numerous people are reluctant to leave the confines of their homes.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the district recorded a minimum temperature of 13.2°C on Sunday, 21 December, marking the lowest temperature so far this winter. By comparison, Saturday had seen a minimum temperature of 14.8°C, indicating a steady drop in overnight temperatures. Meteorologists have warned that the cold spell is likely to intensify over the coming days.

Despite a brief appearance of the sun at around 2:00 pm, it quickly disappeared behind heavy cloud cover. The dense fog has created hazardous conditions on the roads, forcing drivers to rely on their vehicle headlights even during daylight hours.

Local boatman Hurmut Ali, who operates at the Sariakandi ferry ghat, explained, “Visibility on the river is extremely poor due to the fog. The freezing winds make it difficult to even stand, let alone navigate the ferries safely. Travelling in such conditions is a real struggle.”

Similarly, city rickshaw puller Jamal Mia stated, “No matter how cold it gets, we have to work to feed our families. If I do not operate my rickshaw, there is nothing to eat at home.”

Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, senior observer at the Bogura Meteorological Office, confirmed the latest readings: “This morning, we recorded 13.2°C as the district’s lowest temperature this season. The sky remains overcast with chilling winds, and we expect this cold spell to persist for several more days.”

The intensifying cold is particularly affecting daily wage earners, small traders, and those who rely on outdoor work for their livelihoods, forcing many to take extra measures to stay warm while continuing their work. Authorities have advised residents to take precautions and remain cautious during early morning and late evening hours.
