A major disruption struck Bangladesh’s rail network on Wednesday afternoon as the Nilshagor Express derailed near Tilakpur in Santahar, Bogura, bringing rail services between Dhaka and northern Bangladesh to a standstill.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm, when seven carriages of the train, en route from Dhaka to Nilphamari, left the tracks. Fortunately, initial reports indicate that there were no fatalities, although several passengers sustained minor injuries. Emergency response teams and railway engineers rushed to the site to assess the damage and initiate recovery operations.
Railway officials confirmed that all services connecting the capital with northern districts—including Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, and Nilphamari—were suspended until the track could be safely restored. Passengers faced significant delays, and temporary arrangements, such as road transport and shuttle buses, were being considered to assist stranded travellers.

The Bangladesh Railway has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the derailment. Preliminary assessments suggest that track misalignment or a mechanical fault could be responsible, though authorities are yet to confirm the exact reason.
Passengers on the train described chaotic scenes as carriages tilted and jolted violently off the tracks. “It was terrifying. People were screaming, and some were thrown from their seats,” one traveller recounted. First responders provided immediate medical assistance, and affected passengers were evacuated safely.
The derailment has highlighted the ongoing need for improved railway maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, particularly on routes serving northern Bangladesh. Officials have assured the public that all necessary measures will be taken to restore services as quickly and safely as possible.
Bangladesh Railway authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and updates regarding service resumption are expected throughout the evening. Commuters travelling to and from northern districts are advised to check with local stations before planning their journeys.
