Bolivia and the United States are set to resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level after a 17-year hiatus, Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz and US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced on Saturday.
“We’re going to establish those relations,” said Paz, Bolivia’s new centre-right leader, while Landau confirmed that the resumption would be at the ambassadorial level.
Relations were severed when leftist former president Evo Morales expelled the US ambassador, accusing Washington of supporting a right-wing conspiracy. The United States responded by expelling Bolivia’s top diplomat in return.
