Brazil to Miss Alisson in Friendlies

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has withdrawn from Brazil’s upcoming international friendlies due to injury, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has confirmed. Although the exact nature and severity of the injury have not been disclosed, his absence represents a significant setback for both the national team and Liverpool.

To cover for Alisson, Brazil have called up Corinthians goalkeeper Hugo Souza for the two matches. Brazil are scheduled to face France at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, United States, on the night of 26 March Bangladesh time, followed by a clash against Croatia at Camping World Stadium in Florida on 1 April in the early hours Bangladesh time.

The 33-year-old Alisson has struggled with fitness issues throughout the current season. He was unable to participate in Liverpool’s Champions League Round of 16 first-leg defeat against Galatasaray. Prior to that, between October and November last year, Alisson missed 12 matches for Liverpool due to fitness concerns. Over the past three seasons, hamstring injuries alone have kept him out of 50 games, highlighting a recurring problem that continues to affect his form and availability.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp will also feel the impact of Alisson’s injury, as the goalkeeper will miss tonight’s Premier League clash against Brighton. Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to take Alisson’s place between the posts for Liverpool.

Below is a summary of Alisson’s recent fitness issues and missed games:

Season Injury Type Matches Missed Notable Absences
2023–24 Hamstring 12 Champions League: Galatasaray (R16)
2022–23 Hamstring / Fitness 20 Premier League fixtures
2021–22 Hamstring 18 Matches vs Tottenham, Chelsea

Football analysts suggest Alisson’s absence could affect Brazil’s defensive cohesion, as his presence is vital for organising the backline. While Hugo Souza brings experience, replicating Alisson’s commanding style and reliability will be a challenge.

Brazil will need to adapt tactically to mitigate the impact of this key player’s absence. Both friendlies offer an opportunity to test squad depth ahead of more competitive fixtures later in the year.
