The Brisbane Day-Night Test has entered the third day with Australia firmly in control, largely due to an unexpected batting heroics by pacer Mitchell Stark. On day two, Australia closed at 378 for six in 73 overs, and by the first session today, they had breached 400, a historically significant milestone at the Gabba. No team has ever lost a Test here after achieving such a score in the first innings.
Australia added 72 runs for two wickets in the 26-over session, taking their total to 450 for eight in 99 overs. With a 117-run lead, the home side has put England under severe pressure. Alex Carey and Michael Neser, who had been unbeaten at stumps yesterday, were dismissed early, adding just five more runs to their partnership. Neser scored 16 before being bowled by Ben Stokes.
Stark, batting at number nine, joined Carey in a partnership that frustrated England’s bowlers. Stark displayed impeccable technique, playing classic shots and rotating the strike efficiently. Their 34-run partnership over 96 balls provided Australia with crucial runs. Carey fell for 63, caught off Gus Atkinson, but Stark and Cameron Boland continued to bat, with Stark unbeaten on 46 and Boland on 7, frustrating England further.
Australia’s record at the Gabba is impressive; teams with a first-innings lead of 100+ have lost only four times, with the last loss in 1994 to South Africa in Sydney. Stark’s innings has highlighted Australia’s depth and resilience, putting England on the defensive and making a comeback highly unlikely. The Brisbane Test appears to be firmly in Australia’s grasp.
