Brother Allegedly Killed Amid Irrigation Dispute

In Tarash Upazila, a farmer named Raich Uddin has reportedly been killed, with suspicions directed at his own brother, Majnu. Following his death, rumours have circulated that Raich Uddin died due to electrocution; however, his family insists the death was deliberate.

The allegations were made on Thursday (19 March) by the victim’s son, Siam Hossain, during a press briefing. According to the family, the body of Raich Uddin was recovered from his irrigation pump shed by police six days earlier, on Friday (13 March).

Both the deceased and the accused hail from Krishnapur village and are sons of Mohammad Ali. The dispute reportedly centred on the control of an electric-powered irrigation pump, a long-standing source of tension between the two brothers.

Siam Hossain told reporters: “My father and his uncle, Mohammad Majnu, had been in conflict for years over fish farming in our pond and access to farmland via the electric irrigation pump. On Wednesday (11 March), my uncle and two associates, Abdul Latif and Motaleb, forcibly harvested around 40% of my father’s pond fish. When my father attempted to stop them, they allegedly assaulted him with iron rods and bamboo sticks.”

Police arrived promptly to control the situation, and Raich Uddin filed a written complaint at the local police station. Hossain added that, following this confrontation, Majnu threatened his father’s life. Three days later, Raich Uddin was found dead inside the pump shed.

The son insists the murder was premeditated, citing his father’s 15-year history of providing water to 120–130 bighas of farmland, which Majnu reportedly refused to share with others. “My father was regularly threatened, and his life was at risk. This was clearly a planned killing,” said Hossain, who is now demanding a thorough investigation and justice.

Majnu, however, denies all accusations, stating: “Why would I harm my own brother? People are talking unnecessarily, and we cannot comment further at this time.”

Md. Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Tarash Police, said that the autopsy report will reveal the actual cause of death, which will guide the next legal steps.
