Brother Arrested After Attempting Escape in Sister’s Murder Case

A shocking homicide occurred on Monday night in the Eidgah Boro Pukur Southpara area of Halishahar, Chattogram, leaving the local community in a state of distress. According to police sources and eyewitness accounts, a woman identified as Senowara Begum was brutally murdered in her home, and her younger brother, Jana Alam, attempted to flee the scene disguised in a burqa. Residents, however, pursued him and handed him over to the authorities.

The victim, Senowara Begum, was the wife of Saber Ahmed, a resident of the same locality. Police and witnesses reported that at the time of the incident, she was alone in the house, as her husband and son had gone to attend Tarawih prayers at a nearby mosque.

According to eyewitnesses, the accused reportedly entered his sister’s home with the intention of taking her gold jewellery. When Senowara Begum resisted, Jana Alam allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, resulting in her death. In a bid to escape unnoticed, he reportedly wore a burqa, but local residents spotted him, chased him, and restrained him until the police arrived. Police officials stated that some enraged onlookers attempted to seize the accused from law enforcement for vigilante punishment, but officers managed to retain custody.

The victim’s son, Sekandar Hossain, recounted:
“My mother was killed by my uncle while she was alone at home. We returned from Tarawih prayers to find that the local community had captured him before the police arrived.”

Halishahar police officer-in-charge, Kazi Sultan Mohammad Ahsan Uddin, confirmed that the body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital’s morgue for autopsy. A formal murder case is being prepared, and Jana Alam will be presented before the court shortly.
