A double-decker bus operated by the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) collided with a pillar of the elevated expressway in Dhaka’s Farmgate area after becoming lodged beneath the expressway ramp.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 AM on Tuesday, 29 July, and resulted in the upper portion of the bus being severely damaged. According to the police, one person sustained minor injuries in the accident.
Cause of the Accident
Eyewitness accounts suggest that the crash was the result of reckless competition between two BRTC buses attempting to pick up passengers.
“Both buses were speeding side by side, competing to pick up passengers,” said one eyewitness. “During the race, the upper deck of the bus travelling on the right struck the pillar of the expressway forcefully.”
The impact caused the roof of the upper deck to collapse on one side, prompting several passengers to jump out of the windows from the upper floor to escape. A few of them sustained minor injuries during the escape.
Official Statement
Anish Kirtaniya, Assistant Commissioner (Traffic) of Tejgaon Division, confirmed the incident:
“A BRTC bus has crashed into the elevated expressway ramp near Farmgate. The upper section of the bus has been significantly damaged.”
