A sense of profound grief and indignation has gripped the Haldia area of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, following the savage assault and murder of a 30-year-old woman. The victim, identified as Lala Bibi, was the wife of Abdu Shukkur, an expatriate currently working in Malaysia. The incident occurred during the early hours of Sunday, while the victim was reportedly preparing for her pre-dawn Lenten meal.
According to local sources and grieving family members, the tragedy unfolded in a secluded residence situated in the hilly terrain of Madhughona Khala in East Morichya. Neighbours were alerted by muffled screams emanating from the house. Upon rushing to the scene, they discovered Lala Bibi lying unconscious with visible signs of trauma.
The victim’s brother-in-law, Abdul Alam, has publicly alleged that the assailants broke into the home, subjected the woman to a horrific sexual assault, and subsequently murdered her through a combination of physical torture and strangulation. Evidence of blunt force trauma to her head and neck was noted by those who first arrived at the location.
While the investigation is in its infancy, the family has pointed towards a long-standing and bitter land dispute as a potential catalyst for this targeted violence. It is suspected that the perpetrators leveraged the vulnerability of the household—with the husband being overseas—to settle scores through this heinous act.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station, Nur Ahmed, confirmed that preliminary forensic indicators suggest the involvement of multiple individuals. “We have observed clear marks of physical struggle and initial evidence of sexual violation,” the OC stated. Police have already conducted a site visit, prepared a formal inquest report, and transferred the body for a comprehensive post-mortem examination.
